Handling someone else's estate

Settling an estate often falls to someone who is grieving at the same time. Cairn keeps the tasks, accounts, bills and paperwork in one place, so less of it has to be carried in your head.

A checklist that keeps your place

Group the work into categories of tasks, each with a priority, a status and the contact handling it. Attach the paperwork to the task it belongs to. The Overview shows what is done and what is still open, so you can put it down and pick it up again without losing track.

Cairn's Checklist page: tasks grouped by category, each with a status and an assigned contact.

Accounts, bills and debts

Record the recurring bills to pay or cancel, the debts and who to contact about each, and the logins for email and paid services that you may need to reach or close. Mark each one off as it is dealt with.

Funeral wishes on paper

The Funeral page holds the service, music and readings, burial or cremation, the obituary, pallbearers and the people to tell. Save it as a printable PDF to share with family or the funeral home; anything left blank prints as an empty line to fill in by hand.

Kept on your computer

Everything you enter about the estate is stored on your computer and never sent to us. How it works

What Cairn does not do

Cairn organises an estate's information; it does not give legal, tax or financial advice. Rules for probate and tax differ by province, state and country, and a lawyer, notary or accountant where the estate is settled can tell you what applies.

Getting started

Cairn runs on Windows. Nearly every field is optional, so you can begin with whatever is in front of you.
